The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) whose mission is to serve as an independent and effective Electoral Management Body (EMB) committed to the conduct of free, fair and credible elections for sustainable democracy in Nigeria.
The election was held across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Saturday, with a total of 18 presidential candidates contesting. However, the election was postponed until Sunday in some polling units in different states due to violence, logistical problems, theft of BVAS, and other issues.

Despite these difficulties, most of the country has now seen the results of the election, with some states having already finished compiling them at the ward, local government, and state levels. State collation officers will present their results in turn at the National Collation Centre in Abuja starting at 6 p.m. on Sunday as INEC collation officers from all the states are expected to present their final tallies there.
The Chief Returning Officer for the presidential election is Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of INEC, who oversees the proceedings at the National Collation Centre. After compiling the election results from the polling places across the nation, he will announce the final results and declare the winner of the election.
The general election this year is the seventh since the country’s return to democracy; prior elections were held in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. This year’s elections, which were described as the most hotly contested in Nigeria’s recent political history, featured 18 registered parties and four leading candidates: Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Bola Tinubu of the APC, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP.
A candidate must receive the most votes and at least 25% of the votes in 25 states (two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states plus Abuja, the federal capital) in order to be declared the winner. Many Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the election results, which will determine the country’s political direction for the following four years, despite the setbacks and difficulties.
