How to Apply for admission
International Students
ALC requires students to have a minimum of 17 on the ACT or 810 on the new SAT, as well as a 2.25 core GPA from high school. International students must also submit their TOEFL score and a certificate of finance for evaluation by the Director of Admissions. The certificate of finance must also be supported by a bank statement. In order to participate in the Student Work Program, all international students must have an F1 VISA and prior to enrollment must obtain a US-issued Social Security Number. This can be researched at www.sss.gov, or it can be obtained at a local Social Security Office upon arrival in the United States.
Because Alice Lloyd College was founded to serve students from the Appalachian region of the United States, a limited number of international students are admitted. ALC is authorized under federal law to enroll non-immigrant, alien students. Students from other countries should submit the International Student Admissions Packet (pdf) for evaluation by the Director of Admissions no later than June 1st for enrollment in the fall semester and no later than November 1st for the spring semester. In the International Admissions Packet, you will find a checklist of items that must be submitted by either June 1st or November 1st.
A $3500 (US) deposit must be submitted prior to issuance of the SEVIS I-20 to assure you have access to money in case of emergency. This deposit, plus interest, is refunded to the student at the end of your college career, providing you do not owe the College. International students are not eligible for the ALC Scholarship, which is the tuition guarantee scholarship. The only financial aid available to international students is the money earned from work-study performed throughout the semester. Usually, you will work 160 hours per semester, earning approximately $1160, which is put towards your tuition amount.

Admissions Interview
Who conducts the interview?
The Director of Admissions and/or Admissions Counselors will interview the student. The director and counselors are highly active in the student recruitment process and frequently travel to various high schools and college fairs. All of them are graduates of Alice Lloyd and are very knowledgeable about what it takes to succeed at ALC.
Prospective student-athletes are interviewed by coaches. If prospective student athletes are not being recruited by the ALC Athletics Department, they will be required to interview with Admissions.
Who is interviewed?
Students are interviewed individually. While parents are certainly welcome to accompany their son or daughter on their visit to campus, we would prefer that they don’t sit-in on the interview. If, however, a parent does involve themselves in the interview, we ask that they do not dominate the conversation. The admissions interview is designed to put the spotlight on the prospective student. Parents are free to ask questions at any other time.
Does the Admissions Office conduct phone interviews?
No. The interview must be done in-person.
Does the interview process include a campus tour?
Due to the large volume of interview sessions, we will have certain tour sessions Monday – Thursday. Please inform Admissions when you schedule your interview appointment if you would also like to schedule a tour session.
Is there a dress code for the interview?
The Admissions Office does not require students to dress professionally for the interview; however, we do ask that you dress in good taste. Please consult The Student Handbook for tips on appropriate dress.
What type of information is assessed during the interview?
Alice Lloyd College seeks students who demonstrate characteristics such as good academic performance, leadership ability, participation in school activities, strong desire to learn and service to others. Our Admissions Department strives to find students who possess these characteristics so that our faculty and staff can help each student become successful in every aspect of his/her life.
When may I schedule an interview?
After you have been notified by mail that you have met academic requirements and are now eligible for an interview, contact the Admissions Office as soon as possible. It is important to schedule your interview at your earliest convenience. Since admission to Alice Lloyd College is very competitive, early admissions status is highly recommended.
How should I prepare for the interview?
The most important thing is to be yourself! Come prepared to talk about your experiences and to share any and all information that will help us get to know you. Make sure you are familiar with the mission of the College, its history, and all of our policies and student expectations, which you can find on our website and in the College’s Program Catalog and Student Handbook. Since the College is actively seeking future leaders of Appalachia, we encourage you to conduct yourself in a respectable and professional manner.
