- applicants must possess a recognized high school diploma or its equivalent (please note that distance learning degrees/diplomas do not satisfy this requirement for New York State residents). Verification must be supplied to the Admissions Office. Home-schooled applicants should refer to the Home-Schooled Students page. Applicants with a CDOS credential or IEP certificate/diploma will not be accepted. These students are advised to take the GED or TASC exam. A score of 2700 or better on the TASC exam or a 2500 or better on the GED exam is needed for consideration.
- Applications are evaluated individually using a “holistic review” to make the best decision for both the applicant and the college. A variety of factors are considered (e.g., individual program requirements, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, the strength of the academic program, and extracurricular activities).
- To be considered for admission into programs taught on the Alfred campus, the recommended overall high school average is a 76. For programs taught in the School of Applied Technology, Wellsville campus, the recommended overall average is a 74. Applicants for programs taught on the Alfred campus who do not meet specified program requirements but who show potential for success may be considered for admission through the Alfred State Opportunity Program (ASOP) or the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
- In addition to meeting individual program requirements, it is recommended that transfer applicants have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average as well as a grade of “C” or better in each course taken during the most recent semester of attendance.
- Standardized test score (ACT or SAT) results are required for baccalaureate degree programs, for some scholarship considerations, and for those students interested in intercollegiate athletics. They are not required, but are strongly encouraged, for an associate degree and certificate programs. If a student entering an associate degree or certificate program submits standardized test scores, they are used as a supplement to the educational background studied during the application review process. When multiple scores are submitted, the highest composite score is used from either the old or new SAT (beginning March 2016) exam; the SAT will not be super scored combining scores from the old and new exams. The ACT will not be super scored. Standardized test scores are not required for applicants to the baccalaureate degree programs who have completed college-level coursework following high school graduation. (Transfer students interested in intercollegiate athletics should contact the Athletic Department to discuss standardized test score requirements.)
- Financial need is not considered as part of the admissions process.
Students who have attended other colleges following high school graduation, either full or part-time, are classified as transfer students and may receive advanced standing.
Additional Info & Requirements for Transfer Applications
- In addition to completing the SUNY application, you will need to provide an official high school transcript and official transcripts of ALL previous college work. These transcripts should be sent at the time of application to Alfred State Admissions Office, 10 Upper College Drive, Alfred, NY 14802. Note – please ensure that your current name is included on transcripts if your name has changed.
- Students who have completed more than one semester of college-level coursework are ineligible for the undeclared major and must apply for a degree-granting program.
- Transfer applicants applying under the NYS Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) must possess the same academic credentials as required for regular transfer students. In addition, EOP transfer applicants must have been enrolled in an EOP, HEOP, or SEEK program at their previous college(s).
